Same engine as the calculator, no pre-tax deductions. The gap between Texas and Oregon at $100,000 is the size of a car payment.

What this calculator assumes
- Tax year 2026. Federal brackets and standard deductions from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32: $16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household. Social Security stops at the SSA wage base of $184,500; Medicare has no cap and adds 0.9% above $200,000.
- Federal tax is the annual liability, which is what correct withholding under IRS Publication 15-T aims at for a 2020-or-later W-4 with no extra entries. No credits, no second job, no other income.
- Computed properly, full brackets: California, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon. Oregon includes its capped subtraction for federal tax and its exemption credit; New York ignores the benefit recapture that starts above $107,650.
- Flat-rate states, computed: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania. Indiana leaves out county tax.
- Estimates, one rate above a flat deduction: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin. These are marked estimate wherever they appear.
- No state wage tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. Washington still deducts its paid-leave and WA Cares premiums.
- Local income taxes are not included: New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit, Ohio cities and Maryland counties all add a line this page doesn't show.
- Pre-tax: a traditional 401(k) lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare; a Section 125 health premium lowers both. Pennsylvania taxes 401(k) deferrals.
- Hourly: hours over 40 in the week are paid at time and a half, 52 weeks a year, no unpaid weeks.
